About
Students of West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES) are offered a unique opportunity of a hands-on experiment that shows the full life sequence of the salmon from its early stages of life(eyed-egg) to a young mature salmon(smolt). WMAES has been doing this experiment for many years and has become more enjoyable for students every year it has progressed.
Purpose
Since the Native Lake Trout population has been decreasing over the past, we at WMAES are trying to restore that population by teaming up with the Department of Natural Resource (DNR). These trout are beneficial because they feed off the treacherous alewives, an anadromous herring found in North America.
Student Experiences
''The salmon project was a great and fun filled experiment.''
"It's a great opportunity for young minds to learn about the development of organisms!"
"It's cool to be part of something that restores our natural world."
"I loved this project!"
Then and Now
The salmon project has been led by many staff members at our school. It was originally led by Mr. Deshano, who lead the project for two years. After the beginning, many teachers have taken on the responsibility of this great project!
