About
Senior Project is a year long project that almost all the seniors do (all those who don't do the Entrepreneurship Program). Senior Project is divided into three segments, these are divided by trimester, the first and third have a class while the second does not. The first is the paper, during this phase each senior is required to research a problem that is science based and its solutions, and write a double spaced 8-10 page minimum 15 source APA cited paper on that topic. The second phase has each senior go out independently and get 15 hours of field work, this can be done via internships, interviews, job shadows, or other hands on experience. For the final phase each senior must make a power point presentation 8-10 minutes long that will tell an observer the crucial information that they found while researching, as well as what they found during their field work, and their own unique solution.
Purpose
Senior Project is done to prepare students for the college research papers they will be writing the following year, as well as to teach them how to gather research and present it to a crowd.
Student Perspective
"As a student who recently completed the first part, I can definitively say that this was a different experience than any other class or project that I have ever done before. Not only was it more challenging, and stressful, but it was the most rewarding class I have taken. During the course of Senior Project I learned a lot about how to make a research paper and how to site sources. The hardest part for me was, my own fault, I put off seriously working on the writing of the paper until the last 3 weeks, and I ended up crunched for time and working very long nights trying to rush and finish." - A. "Senior project is not as easy as it sounds. They prepare you for college and you learn new things. Picking a topic is simple, but you need to be able to back it up well to meet the 8-10 page deadline. Also, there are many deadlines you have to meet, and if you do not meet them, then you are affecting your grade. It can also be very stressful if you fall behind, so for future seniors, make sure you meet the deadlines. Although this class is somewhat difficult, it was a good class experience." -Anna M. Manning
Then and Now
Over time Senior Project has changed in a few ways:
At first Senior Project was more like Science Fair, and over years it has changed to seniors doing serious research and thinking about how to come up with a solution.
In years prior you used to be able to study psychology themed topics, and you no longer can due to the lack of available solutions and field work.
